The size of the original artwork is 42 by 60 inches and now resides at the National Gallery of Art. Bellows died early of appendicitis while he was at the height of his career. His wife, Emma inherited this painting upon his death, at her auction or shortly afterwards the painting was purchased by Paul Mellon who then gifted it to the NGA of the Smithsonian in 1986.This scene portrays downtown Manhattan early in the 20th century. The rhythms of the painting get you looking right away, crowds are moving in every direction along with the motorized and horse drawn traffic. The tall buildings of the city add a backdrop to the whole scene. A group of spindly, tremulous trees are in front of the buildings, looking like they are clinging on to their very existence by a thread. Famous Artists art print #222
