Iris Versicolor Botanical Art Print
An archival premium Quality Botanical art Print of the Versicolor Iris by Curtis for sale by Brandywine General Store. The versicolor iris is also known as the Blue Flag, Harlequin Blue Flag or the Northern Blue Flag, the flower gets its name, versicolor, from the Greek work for rainbow, alluding to the prismatic colors of the species. This plant was illustrated by Curtis in Volume 1 of his Botanical Magazine in 1787. Curtis describes the iris thus "A native of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, it has a perennial root, is hardy and will thrive in almost any soil or situation and may be increased by parting its roots in the autumn. This species has, for the most part, a stalk unusually crooked or elbowed, by which it is particularly distinguished. It flowers in June as do most of this beautiful tribe..." Triandria Monogynia.
