An archival premium quality Botanical art Print of Lilac var Dr. Lindley painted by Louis Van Houtte for one his botanical journals for sale by Brandywine General Store. He describes this variety of lilac thus "A superior dwarf compact lilac that is free growing and well suited for forcing into winter blooming in the green house. A very showy plant for the greenhouses across Europe." Most lilac species come from Asia, they need a cold climate and a period of cold initiated dormancy for the bushes to bloom in the following spring. In 1767 Thomas Jefferson recorded his method of planting lilacs in his garden book and on March 3, 1785 George Washington wrote that he had transplanted lilacs into his gardens. However the oldest living lilacs in North America are most likely those at the Governor Wentworth estate in Portsmouth New Hampshire, these bushes were believed to have been planted around 1750. Lilacs grow best in full sun and well drained soil, it can take the shrubs 3 to 4 years to get established, but once established they can live for centuries. Syringa Vulgaris Botanical art print #68
