Magnolia, Small or White Bay by Redoute Botanical Art Print
An archival premium Quality Botanical art Print of Small Magnolia or White Bay by Redoute for sale by Brandywine General Store. This hand colored stipple engraving by French Botanical Artist, H. J. Redoute was taken from the 1st edition of North America Sylva published in 1817. This ornamental tree was described in the book thus. This is one of the most abundant trees growing in wet ground in the maritime parts of the United States, the Floridas and Lower Louisiana. It is also found in the North, but not far into the interior. In the Northern States the tree goes by the name Magnolia, while in the southern regions it goes by White Bay or Sweet Bay. It normally grows to 20 to 30 feet in height with 12 to 14 inches in diameter in the South and being smaller in the colder climates of the North. It was said that no tree rivals the beauty of its foliage and flowers. Women and children would invade the swamps at blooming time to gather the fragrant blossoms to sell in the city markets.
