This flower was published in the artist's book Reichenbachia, which was a huge botanical journal which mainly featured orchids. This brownish red flowering plant was Plate #7 in Volume 1 which was published in 1888. The genus was separated from Odontoglossum and put into Rossioglossum because of their free lip perpendicular to the column with auriculate basal lobes and a specialized callus. The genus is named after Ross, an English orchid collector in Barker, Mexico and the greek word Greek glossa, which means tongue. Botanical art print #136
