Raven by John James Audubon art print
An archival premium quality art print of The Raven by John James Audubon for his ornithology book, The Birds of North America, for sale by Brandywine General Store.. The Raven was the 101st picture in this epic reference book. Audubon shows a large single black raven setting in a thick shell bark hickory tree. Mr Audubon says the following of the Raven "In the United States, the Raven is in some measure a migratory bird, individuals retiring to the extreme south during severe winters, but returning towards the Middle, Western, and Northern Districts at the first indications of milder weather Intent on convincing his mate of the fervour and constancy of his love, he now gently glides beneath her, floats in the buoyant air, or sails by her side. Would that I could describe to you, reader, the many musical inflections by means of which they hold converse during these amatory excursions! These sounds doubtless express their pure conjugal feelings, confirmed and rendered more intense by long years of happiness in each other's society. In this manner they may recall the pleasing remembrance of their youthful days, recount the events of their life, and express the pleasure they enjoy." Audubon also goes on to praise the thick shell bark hickory, saying this was the second best nut in the United States after the pecan and that a lot of them were exported to Europe.
