The artist finished this canvas shortly before he committed suicide. Before his death, Van Gogh completed 77 artworks while living at Auvers-Sur-Oise, France. He said of the peasant huts "in my opinion the most marvelous of all that I know in the sphere of architecture is huts with their roofs of moss grown straw and a smoky hearth."
