Brandywine General Store
A Museum Quality Art Print of the WV Governor's Mansion in Landscape Format for sale by Brandywine General Store. This Georgian Architectural style dwelling is located in Charleston WV along the Kanawha River and beside the Capitol Building. For the first 30 years of WV existence as a state, no mansion was provided for the Governor to live in, they had to furnish their own homes. In 1893 the state authorized 22,000.00 to buy a huge frame home across from the old State Capitol Building on Capitol Street in Charleston. When this Capitol burned in 1921 the Legislature passed a sales tax to provide revenues for the construction of a new Capitol and this bill also included approximately 100,000.00 to build this current Governor's Mansion. It is thought though that the final cost was about twice the allotted amount. Picture #382
