Our premium archival artwork of this vintage ad shows a grizzled old man holding a glass from Wiedemanns Fine Beer and also a paper stub sticking out of his pocket with the brewery name. Wiedemann was born in Germany in 1833 and came to the United States when he was 13 years old. He worked his way up through different breweries, learning the business every step of the way. He went into partners with John Butcher in 1866 at Jefferson Street Brewery, this business expanded greatly by establishing a reputation for strict integrity, modest demeanor and close attention to business. His lager won legions of loyal customers because he used the best malts and hops and prepared his beers to the finest of the German tradition. Weidemann bought out Butcher in 1878 for 28,000.00, Wiedemann incorporated all his holdings in 1890 as the George Wiedemann Brewing Company, he designed and built one of the world's largest and most efficient breweries, which covered five acres of ground in the 1880s. The brew house was five stories high, containing two complete brewing outfits that fed off a 300 barrel copper brew kettle and had a total annual capacity of 80,000 gallons. The company's standard lager, extra pale lager and Muechener beers retailed widely in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee and eventually required a stable of 150 horses to keep all their customers supplied with product. Wiedemann died in 1890, however the business continued on due to his vision and by 1900 Wiedemanns was the largest brewery south of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi. In 1967 the company was sold to G. Heilemann Brewing Company of Lacrosse Wisconsin, at this time they were producing 900,000 barrels of beer annually. Heilemann concluded that the Newport Kentucky brewery operations were no longer cost effective and closed the brewery down in May of 1983. However now the brewery has been purchased by people who hope to bring back the name of Wiedemann beer and the business. This print has a border added, it can be framed and will look somewhat like it is matted. We also have one with no border. Picture #03
