A 1961 West Virginia Passenger Automobile Steel License Plate, the color of this '61 WV car tag is maroon with white letters and has a reflective coating. For some reason the Mountain State DMV made several different varieties of license plates during the model year of 1961. Some were steel, such as these, some aluminum, some with debossed lettering, some with embossed, some with a reflective coating and some without. It is almost like this year was for experimenting to see which direction the Department of Motor Vehicles wanted to go in the making of the motorist's license plates.
