Battle of Pea Ridge Fine Art Civil War Print

An archival premium quality art Print of The Battle of Pea Ridge by Kurz and Allison from 1889 for sale by Brandywine General Store. This major battle, fought March 06 thru 08, 1862, in the western theater of the Civil War played a pivotal role in securing Missouri for the Union and opening up Arkansas to occupation by the Northern Forces. The Confederate Strategy was to advance through Missouri, defeat the Federal forces and then capture St. Louis, thereby acquiring the Gateway to the West. These Southern Forces were under the command of Major General Earl Van Dorn, who was a nephew of former President Andrew Jackson. He and his forces met with the Union troops at Pea Ridge and for one of the few times in the history of the Civil War, Van Dorn had more men and more cannon and should have routed the Federal Troops. But in the end, the Northern troops under the command of General Curtis, defeated the Confederate Army and dealt a severe blow to the Southern strategy to capture more land in the west. Some say Van Dorn fought so poorly because he was still recovering from pneumonia and was fevered, in fact he had to lay in a wagon when the march started, because of his illness. This major battle is also sometimes called The Battle of Elkhorn Tavern, because this was the headquarters of General Curtis. The Confederate Army lost high key personnel during this battle including Generals McCulloch, McIntosh and William Y. Stack. Pea Ridge was located in Northwest Arkansas near Garfield.
