Battle of Spottsylvania Court House Fine Art Civil War Print
An archival premium quality Art Print of The Battle of Spottsylvania made from the original art by L. Prang and Co for sale by Brandywine General Store. This antique print was drawn by Thulstrup for the lithographers with a copyright date of 1887. General Ulysses S. Grant was determined to get to the Capitol city of Richmond, but Robert E. Lee stood in his way. The Battle of Spottsylvania or sometimes also known as the Battle of Spottsylvania Court House was where the two Generals met and this long engagement was fought from May 08 thru May 21, 1864. Both the Union and Confederates were worn out from fighting the Wilderness Battle not long before, but when they met they had no choice but to fight again. This was a very bloody battle, most likely the bloodiest of the Civil War during the year of 1864 and some experts think it was about 5th in line of bloodiest battles of the entire Civil War. In the end Grant didn't get to advance, he had to regroup, he lost a lot of men but so also did Lee. Grant had men in reserve but Lee did not. So even though this was technically probably a Confederate Victory, it was a Pyrrhic Victory for General Lee and his men, because even though his losses were smaller, he had no reserves to fall back on.
