The artwork portrays St. Andrew dying on the cross in a divine light with the bold contrasts of light and dark suggesting the presence of God. Andrew's efforts to introduce Christianity into Greece were met with hostility from the authorities and he was sentenced to die on the Cross, he died a martyr.
