These flowers are a sub tribe of the Tradescantieae flowering plant family. Some of these tropical plants resemble the ginger plant in growth and habit but is actually related to the spiderworts. They are native to the tropical woodlands of North Central and South America, especially in the Atlantic Forest vegetation in Brazil. They are cultivated for their handsome spotted stems, large shiny foliage and striking blue flowers. Van Houtte shows the checkered shiny foliage very plainly with the deep blue flowers, this plant was to tall to put on this aspect of paper, so the artist cut the plant and shows the stems to the side of the leaves and blooms. A very striking picture. Botanical art print #106
