Charles V, Emperor Portrait by Barend Van Orley Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of the Portrait of Charles V by Barend van Orley for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on oak in the year 1519. The size of the original artwork is 28 by 20 inches and now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. Charles V was born in Gent, the son of Philip the Fair and Juana the Mad. In 1516 Charles acquired the Spanish Crown after the sudden death of his grandfather, Ferdinand of Aragon. In 1519 he was elected Holy Roman Emperor instead of King Francis I of France. The emperor's hand is on a marble parapet with a gold band around him and a fur coat. Contemporary written accounts of Charles physical appearances exist, they tell of his lower lip hanging and his mouth was always open if he did not think to close it. When he did close his mouth, his upper teeth could not meet hte lower teeth, they had a large gap between them. Amazingly other portraits exist of this early emperor, they are now approaching 600 years of age as is this one, faults do exist on our prints that can not all be repaired. Barend also painted an earlier portrait of Charles in 1516 at the time of his accession to the Spanish throne, but the original painting does not exist anymore. Copies do still exist with the most famous one now being in the Louvre Museum. Famous people art print #22
