Pteris Tricolor is the scientific name with pteris meaning brake, is a genus of around 280 species of ferns that are native to the tropical regions and sub tropical regions of the World. The term brake is the middle English word for fern from Southern England, it is unclear today of the origination for the meaning of this word to mean fern, but might be from bracken. The more common name today is the painted brake fern. Ferns have been around for almost 400 million years, they were on Earth with the dinosaurs. They do not bloom, but reproduce primitively like fungi, through spores. The English of the Victorian era liked ferns so well that they artfully worked cast iron and glass to create "ferneries" in which humidity and soil dampness remained constant.
