Millard Fillmore was the 13th President of the United States serving in this office from 1850 to 1853. He was the vice president of Zachary Taylor and when he died suddenly after a short time in office, Fillmore became the President. He was born in a log cabin on January 07, 1800 in Summerhill NY and died March 08, 1874 in Buffalo NY. His term as president is consistently ranked in the bottom 10 in popularity by historians. Fillmore was the last Whig President and the last President not to be affiliated with either the Democrat or Republican Parties. He appointed the only Whig Supreme Court Justice. He was an anti slavery moderate, he opposed abolitionist demands to exclude slavery from all the territory gained in the Mexican War. Instead he supported the Compromise of 1850 which briefly ended the crisis. In foreign policy, Fillmore supported U. S. Navy expeditions to open trade in Japan, opposed French designs on Hawaii and was embarrassed by Narciso Lopez's filibuster expeditions to Cuba. When the Whig party broke up in 1854, he and other conservative Whigs joined the American Party. He was the American Party candidate for President in 1856, but finished 3rd in the race. During the Civil War, Fillmore denounced secession and agreed that the Union must be maintained by force if necessary, but was very critical of the war policies of President Abraham Lincoln.
