The artist finished this portrait of the future 9th President of the US in the year 1813. The size of the original oil on canvas is 28 by 24 inches and now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. William Henry Harrison was Governor of the Indiana Territory and Wilderness when the Shawnee Indians, led by Tecumseh, joined forces with the British against the Americans in the War of 1812. Tecumseh's brother Tenskwatawa, the Prophet, led a surprise attack on Harrison's forces at Tippecanoe, with Harrison and the American forces suffering heavy casualtires. However, the Indians left the battlefield and were pursued by Harrison and he destroyed them at their stronghold, Prophets Town, leading to a complete American Victory. A year later Harrison and his forces killed Tecumseh and routed the British at the Battle of the Thames in Canada on October 05, 1813. William Henry Harrison was appointed as a Brigadier General at the outbreak of the War of 1812. In 1840, the famous political slogan, Tippecanoe and Tyler too, propelled William Henry Harrison and the Whig party to victory in the presidential election. But after giving the longest inaugural speech in American History, Tyler then went on to serve the shortest term as President in history, after succumbing to pneumonia after only a month in office.
