Laporte, George Henry - A Master of the Royal Buckhounds on a Gray Hunter
An archival premium quality art print of A Master of the Royal Buckhounds on a Grey Hunter Horse by George Henry Laporte painted in the 1830s for sale by Brandywine General Store. This painting was recently sold in 2008 by Christie's for a total of 48,486 dollars against an estimate of 23,000 to 35,000. The Royal Buckhounds Kennels at Ascot were established by Queen Anne who lived from 1665 - 1714, who was an avid huntswoman. In addition she ordered a race course on Ascot Heath to be laid out in 1711. The Master of the Buckhounds was an officer in the Master of the Horse's Department of the Royal Household. As a political office, the master, always a nobleman, changed with each ministry. The master is not identified in this painting and his identity will probably be lost to history, but the choice can be narrowed down to three men. The painting can be artistically dated by the style to the mid to late 1830s. The three men who served during this time period were George Stanhope, the 6th Earl of Chesterfield, elected December 30, 1834, William George Hay, elected April 30, 1835 or it could also have been George William Fox Kinnaird, 1st Baron Kinnaird who was elected to the position in December 21, 1839.
