San Juan Capistrano was a Spanish mission in colonial Spanish California and is located in present day Orange County. It was founded in 1776 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order and named for Giovanni da Capistrano, a 15th century theologian and warrior priest who resided in the Abruzzo region of Italy. San Juan Capistrano has the distinction of being home to the oldest building in CA still in use, a chapel built in 1782, known as Serra's Chapel or also known as Father Serra's Church. The first wines produced in Alta California was made from grapes grown at this mission, which were first planted in 1779. The Mission is best known for the annual Return of the Swallows which is observed every March 19th. Picture #71
