An archival premium Quality art Print of James Monroe Portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1817 for sale by Brandywine General Store. James Monroe was born on April 28, 1758 and was the last President of the so called Virginia Dynasty, because four out of the first five Presidents of the New Country were from the commonwealth of Virginia. Monroe attended college at William and Mary, but dropped out and became a "radical" to the British. His first act of rebellion was joining with some of his former classmates and raiding the arsenal of the British Royal Governor and then turning all the weaponry and supplies over to the Virginia Militia. He soon joined the Continental Army, becoming an officer in 1776 and was part of General George Washington's army at the Battle of Trenton where he was badly wounded. After the Revolutionary War, Monroe studied law under the tutelage of Thomas Jefferson, beginning a lifelong friendship. Monroe tried his hand at farming but he was much better at being a lawyer. He also held various political positions before becoming the President of the United States in 1817 and serving two terms until 1825. He is famous for the Monroe Doctrine which stated that no European powers could ever again colonize any lands in the Americas, and to do so would be an act of War against the United States. His terms in office were known as the era of good feelings, because of the favorable outcome of the War of 1812, the Nation was now enjoying a booming economy and the Federalists, the only other political party was in its death throes, so things were great in the young United States under James Monroe.
