Pine, Loblolly by Redoute Botanical Art Print
An archival premium Quality Botanical Art Print of the Loblolly Pine by Redoute for sale by Brandywine General Store. This French Botanical Engraver finished this painting for the great book, Sylva of North America which was paid for by the French Government so they could learn all about the new fauna and trees in the new countries of the United States and parts of Canada. The Loblolly Pine was described thus in the book. Throughout the Southern States this tree is called the Loblolly Pine, but further north into the Petersburg and Richmond area of Virginia the name changes to White Pine. It grows where the soil is dry and sandy on spots consisting of red clay and mingled with gravel. The tree exceeds 80 feet in height with a diameter of around 3 feet with a wide spreading summit. The lumber is sued for building houses when the Yellow Pine is absent but the boards from the White Pine will shrink and become uneven. Bakers use the wood in their ovens as it is a third cheaper than the more resinous wood of the Long Leaf Pine. Even though it yields turpentine in abundance this is regarded as the least valuable of the pines and is little esteemed in America.
