The size of the original painting is 16 by 22 inches and is oil on paper laid down on canvas. Between 1871 and 1873, Bierstadt and his wife stayed in San Fransisco and during this stay the artist painted many scenes of the western coast, including this one. This painting was sketched from the historic Cliff House, located at the Northwest corner of San Fransisco, built in 1863 this dramatic cliff side structure became a landmark destination where sightseers could stop to gaze at the multitudes of sea lions sunning themselves on the now famous Seal Rocks. Capturing in marvelous detail the magnificent light and awe inspiring power of nature, as well as the damp, misty air and rugged shore so characteristic of the San Fransisco coast, Bierstadt's depictions of Seal Rock are among the artist's most famous and beloved west coast paintings.
