John Tyler was the first United States President to assume office from the Vice Presidency due to the death of the President, which in this case was William Henry Harrison who only served 1 month in office. To avoid a constitutional crisis after the death of President Harrison, Tyler immediately moved into the White House and took the oath of office for the Presidency. Tyler served as our 10th United States President from 1841 to 1845. He had been elected to the office of Vice President with the Whig Party, but when he moved into the head office, he fell out with his party because he thought a lot of the things this party were doing were unconstitutional. The Whig Party then gave Tyler the nickname "His Accidency" because he assumed Presidential Office without being elected. Tyler's opposition to Nationalism and his very strong support of State's Rights endeared him to his fellow Virginians and other Southerners, but alienated him from the major political powers in Washington. When he served out his first term he did not run for election again. He spent the last part of his term as President on the annexation of the Republic of Texas, which his successor, James Polk finished. When the Civil War began, Tyler tried to lead a compromise movement to keep the Union together, however in failing in this endeavor he worked to create the Southern Confederacy. He died in 1862 while a member of the Confederate House of Representatives. Famous people art print #58
