Washington Martha - The Athenaeum Portrait by Gilbert Stuart art print
An archival premium Quality art Print of Martha Washington, the Athenaeum Portrait by Gilbert Stuart for sale by Brandywine General Store. This early American artist painted this portrait of the first First Lady in 1796 with the original size being 30 by 25 inches. It is now located at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Stuart painted two portraits, this one of Martha and one of the President. He purposefully left these two paintings unfinished because he liked the one of the President better than any other he had painted. Since it was left unfinished, he used that painting as a model for many more portraits through the years so the President was not required to set each time a portrait was required. Gilbert Stuart had painted a very good likeness of President Washington in 1795. According to Rembrandt Peale, Martha talked her husband into setting for another portrait because she wished to have a painting of herself. The President agreed to Martha and both pictures when finished were to be hers. During Stuart's lifetime these two paintings were known as the Mount Vernon Portraits. They are now called the Athenaeum Portraits because they were owned by the Boston Athenaeum for more than 150 years. Gilbert Stuart painted over 100 portraits of the first President, George Washington, many of which were taken from the Athanaeum Portrait, however he never painted another image of Martha Washington.
