The base has 2 copper plaques, the top one reads 1st Regiment Minnesota Volunteers, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Corps - Erected by the state of Minnesota. The 2nd plaque tells of the unit's activities on July 3, 1863 including their help in repelling Pickett's charge and also capturing a Confederate flag.
