$9.99

A premium quality art print of 71st Pennsylvania infantry monument in Gettysburg National Military park for sale by Brandywine General Store. Our historical civil war artwork features the memorial for the Army of the Potomac unit of the Philadelphia brigade, 71st regiment, PA volunteers, 2nd brigade, 2nd division, 2nd Corps which was commanded by Colonel R. Penn Smith. This unit was also known as the 1st California Regiment. Long time San Fransisco resident, Edward D. Baker, wanted to show California's sympathies for the Union, so he organized 4  regiments from Philadelphia into California units. He commanded them until his death in 1861 after which the 4 units were renamed as the 69th, 71st, 72nd and 106th Pennsylvania. Some of the soldiers though kept the California regiment names as well. The monument was placed in the Gettysburg battlefield in 1887 and is located in the Angle. Picture #1714 an original archival civil war print made from a photograph in the Brandywine collection.
