An archival premium Quality Art Print of the scarlet ibis as originally painted by John James Audubon for his ornithology book The Birds of America for sale by Brandywine General Store. This bird illustration tome is considered one of the best books ever published on birds. This large very colorful water bird was picture or plate number 397 in the 1st Havell edition of the book. The picture shows an adult male and a juvenile bird. Audubon found the scarlet ibis to be quite rare, encountering only three specimens during his travels throughout the United States. These were spotted in Bayou Sara in the state of Louisiana on July 03, 1821, Audubon was unable to acquire a specimen for his drawings, but found a bird from other means in which to make his paintings. Audubon says since he did not get to observe these birds in person, he thought it best not to give any descriptions of their habits, but the scarlet ibis were very similar to the white ibis, which he gives a long account.
