He is dressed in dark blue trousers and tunic of a General of the Republic, with a gold embroidered red collar. The background gives the illusion of a raging battle with a few houses visible and a smoking cannon ball still visible. The painting passed through the collections of Napoleon himself, then to Napoleon III before being sequestered in 1870. However it was then reacquired the next year by the wife of Napoleon III, Eugenie de Montijo, who 8 years later gave it to the Louvre. This is another copy of the painting that is now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Famous People #46
