Napoleon in his Study at Tuileries by David Jacques Louis Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of Emperor Napoleon in His Study at Tuileries painted by Jacques David Louis for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this portrait of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in his study at the Tuileries in the year 1812. Despite the excellent detail, it is doubtful if Napoleon ever posed for this picture. This art work was commissioned by Alexander Hamilton in 1811 who was a big admirer of the emperor. In 1882 the painting was sold to Archibald Primrose the 5th Earl of Rosebery, whose heirs held the painting until 1954 when it was then sold to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, who in turn deposited it to the Washington DC National Gallery of Art, where it remains today. The scene shows Napoleon standing 3/4 life size wearing the uniform of a Colonel of the Imperial Guard Foot Grenadiers. The office is on the first floor of the Tuileries and has a wooden chair decorated in red velvet and gold embroidery, an empire style desk on a sculpted stone base with a decorative lion's head. Piled on the desk are a pen, books, dossiers and rolled papers. The scene takes place early in the morning and is supposed to signify the emperor staying up all night doing work for the people of France. Famous people art print #19
