The artist painted this oil on canvas sometime between the period of 1865 to 1870 with the original now at t he Worcester Art Museum. During Bierstadt's second trip to the West in 1863 he visited Yosemite Valley and made oil sketches and drawings that would later serve as studies for his Western Paintings. Around this time the grandeur and beauty of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevadas were being touted in the Nation's newspapers and literature, arousing National Pride in these newfound natural splendors, rivaling Europe"s Great Alps in the public's imagination, allowing for artist's such as Bierstadt to capitilize on their work of the American West. Dramatic interest in created in this canvas through the interplay of atmospheric affects, the spray from the falls above and the glassy reflections in the still waters below. The height and grandeur of the falls are also evident.
