Bonheur, Rosa - Plowing in Nevers Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of Plowing in Nevers painted by Rosa Bonheur for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist completed this oil on canvas panoramic landscape in 1849 and is now at the Musee d'Orsay. This farming scene shows the first plowing or dressing, which was done in early autumn to break the surface of the soil and aerate it during the winter, hence another name for the art, The First Dressing. The rolling country side with wooded hills in the distance provides the background for the two teams of oxen pulling heavy plows. The freshly turned earth fills the foreground. This is primarily an animal painting as they are big and draw your eye to them, while the farmers or cowherd are diminutive in size. This is a tribute to agricultural labor whose grandeur was magnified because in these post revolutionary days it was easy to contrast with the corruption of the cities. This scene was located in the Nivernais provincial region which was rich with agricultural traditions and rural landscapes. This realist work of art drew almost unanimous critical acclaim. The State had commissioned this painting from Rosa Bonheur in 1848 for the Musee de Lyon, but decided to keep it in Paris at he Musee du Luxembourg. When the artist died, rich and famous throughout France, England and particularly in the United States, the painting was put in the Louvre and later allocated to the Musee d'Orsay.
