Boone, The Capture of the Callaway Girls and Jemima by the Indians Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of The Capture of the Callaway Girls and Jemima Boone by the Indians as painted by Karl Bodner for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist painted this oil on canvas in the year 1852. The size of the original artwork is 27 by 32 inches and now hangs in the Cincinnati Museum Center. The painting depicts a group of Shawnee Indians kidnapping Jemima Boone, the daughter of the famous explorer Daniel Boone, and her friends Betsey and Fanny Callaway. The girls had crossed the river opposite Boonesborough KY in a canoe, at a late hour in the afternoon. The girls were not aware of any danger and played and splashed in the water with the canoe paddles, floating with the currents and drifted near the shoreline, where the Shawnee Indians await and capture the girls. The raiding Indian Party was led by Hanging Maw and consisted of two Cherokee and three Shawnee Warriors. The girls attempted to mark their trail as they were led across the Ohio river to the north and the Shawnee towns located there. Daniel Boone led the rescue party who caught up to the Indian party and girls 3 mornings later. A couple of the Indians were shot, the others fled the scene, leaving the 3 girls safe and unharmed. This has been a famous tale of the American frontier, the chase scene in the novel, The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper is based on this incident. Famous people art print #53
