Caravaggio, Michelangelo Merisi da - The Lute Player
A Museum Quality Print of The Lute Player by Caravaggio for sale by Brandywine General Store. This oil on canvas was originally painted by Michelangelo Caravaggio around the year 1600. This painting was done in three different variations, this being the Hermitage Version. Caravaggio painted this for his patron, the Cardinal Francesco Del Monte and the painting was described as A painting of a young man playing the lute who seemed altogether alive and real, with a carafe of flowers full of water, in which you could see perfectly the reflection of a window and other reflections of that room inside the water and on those flowers there was a lively dew depicted with exquisite care. This is the best piece he (Caravaggio) ever painted. The painting has darkened in the last 400 years so you can't see the reflection in the water now. All three versions of this painting show a young boy with soft facial features and brown hair, accompanying himself on the lute as he sings a madrigal about love. These musical instruments were very expensive in this era and most likely came from Cardinal Del Montes personal collection. The original oil on Canvas of this version of the Lute Player resides in the Hermitage Museum. Old Masters Painting #09
