The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1865 with the original size being 25 by 32 inches. Courbet painted this work during a productive trip to Trouville which he took with James McNeill Whistler from September to November 1865. He wrote to his father that he had completed 35 paintings during this 3 month period, including this seascape.
