The artist finished this oil on canvas in the years 1825 to 1830. The size of the original artwork is 14 by 17 inches and now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. These two men are seen from behind so the viewer may participate in their communion with nature. The two have been identified as the artist himself, being on the right. The man on the left is his friend and disciple, August Heinrich. Fascination with the moon ran high among the German Romantic Artists.
