Greco, El - St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata by El Greco for sale by Brandywine General Store. The Greek artist finished this oil on canvas during the Renaissance era of around 1585 to 1590 with the size of the original artwork being 40 by 38 inches. In 1226 St. Francis of Assisi had a vision of a seraph, which is the highest order of angel, with an image of the crucified Christ amid its six wings, from which the Saint miraculously received the stigmata, this painting shows that moment in time. El Greco depicts the wounds of Francis's hands and his transfixed gaze towards heaven conveys the spiritual impact of the experience. What appears to be a real piece of paper stuck onto the canvas was actually painted in by the artist with a note written saying "Domenikos Theotokopoulos Made This", in Greek, expressing pride in his origins. This miraculous scene was one of the artist's favorite subjects to paint. Religious art print #62
