Greco, El - View and Plan of Toledo Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of the View and Plan of Toledo by El Greco. The artist painted this oil on canvas around the year 1610 with the size of the original artwork being 132 by 228 centimeters. El Greco painted several view of the city of Toledo, this one, as in some of the others, are not entirely accurate in their representations of the city. In this view a young man holds a map for the viewer to see and this partially corrects the view of the city. El Greco gives the Hospital of Don Juan Tavera a central place in the picture, it is moved from the actual setting so that the facade could be shown without blocking out the view of the other important buildings. In the upper part of the picture is a scene in which the Virgin presents a vestment to Saint Lidefonso. The landscape itself is painted in brown and green with blue tints and the mythological and religious elements are minimal. In his pictures of Toledo, El Greco creates the genre of the Spanish landscape, a branch of art which was neglected until the emergence of Velazquez. This complex composition also includes an allegory of the river Tagus, seen here as a sculpture that pours water and hence prosperity. The young man holding the map is thought to have been the son of El Greco, however the son would have been at least 30 years at the time of the painting. Old Masters art print #72
