The scene depicts the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Appleton Street in Boston's South End. In his first major oil painting, the artist was trying to win over the American people with the modern urban theme so embraced by the French Impressionists he had encountered while in Paris. The view shows a rainy day with a woman and child in the forefront under an umbrella, while several horse and buggies with passengers are traveling by on the rain covered Boston Streets.
