Johnson, Eastman - A Different Sugaring Off Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of a Different Sugaring Off by Eastman Johnson for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist painted this oil on canvas in 1865 which was the last year of the Civil War. Sugaring Off was the first day of the syrup or sugar season, when the sap was taken out of the sugar maple trees and boiled down into syrup or could be boiled down even further and made into sugar. This was a big ordeal as can be evidenced by this picture. The village people would all turn out and gather around the kettles boiling the sap and would party, dance and have all kinds of merriment. Not only was this fun, it was also a necessary work, this would be the only sugar and syrup the country people would have all winter and the next year. The sugar clinkers, made by dropping the sap into a cup of water to test if the sap needed boiled any more, were a treat like no other. Country decor art print #193
