Kessel, Jan van - Vanitas Still Life Fine Art Print
An archival premium Quality art Print of Vanitas Still Life by Jan van Kessel for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist painted this oil on copper sometime between 1665 and 1670. Almost all artists in the Netherlands includes a vanitas in their repertoire. The vanitas is the lamentation of the transience of all things. Jan van Kessel utilizes the skull and the bubbles to symbolize this idea. The bubbles float delicately, with one still hanging onto the end of the straw used to blow them. The creator of the bubbles is not seen though, giving us the impression that he has left. The bubbles in time will pop and their beauty will end. The skull, placed in the center of this piece lets the viewer know the idea behind this piece. Flowers are placed around the skull, giving a nice contrast between life and death. Once again we see insects utilized to show decay. The plants are beginning to wilt, and the bugs are eating away at them. The hourglass shows time slipping away, and shows us that Kessel has only caught a moment in time which will soon fade. Still Life art print #19
