The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1913 with the original size being 51 by 36 inches and now hangs at the Art Institute of Chicago. Marc painted this composition following a trip to the Italian town of Merano in the Southern Tirol. The title refers to the magical harmony he sensed there between human life, represented by the houses and mill on the left and Nature, embodied by the lyrical region of trees and animals on the right.
