Pocahontas by Unknown Artist art print
An archival premium Quality art Print of Pocahontas by an Unknown Artist for sale by Brandywine General Store. This oil on canvas was painted sometime shortly after 1616, but unfortunately the artist's name has been lost to history. The size of the original artwork is 30 by 25 inches and is now at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Following her conversion to Christianity and marriage to Englishman John Rolfe, Pocahontas and her family made the voyage across the ocean to England. The main reason for this long journey was to show the English in the old country that the Indians and the colonists in the Virginia Colony could co exist in peace. While in England, Pocahontas set for this portrait, with the unknown artist adding the inscriptions below her likeness. Through an error in transcribing the information the text identifies her husband as Thomas instead of John. Thomas was the name of the son that John Rolfe and Pocahontas had after their marriage.
