Renoir Pierre Auguste - Venice The Doge's Palace Fine Art Print

An archival premium Quality Art print of The Doge's Palace painted by the French Impressionist artist, Auguste Pierre Renoir for sale by Brandywine General Store. The original of this oil on canvas measures 21 1/2 inches by 25 7/8 inches and now hangs at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. Pierre Auguste Renoir went to Italy in 1881 and made Venice his first stop. The paintings he did here were mostly of the main tourist attractions and most were just sketches, rather than finished art works. However this is one of two that Renoir worked into a more complete state. Despite his using an Impressionist color scheme and lighting effects, Renoir renders the buildings with remarkable accuracy. The Doge's Palace, a big tourist attraction of Venice, is a masterpiece of Gothic Architecture, an impressive structure composed of layers of building elements and ornamentation. The structure consists of three blocks, each incorporating the previous buildings into the current building at the time. The wing towards St. Marks is the oldest part of the palace, dating back to 1340, the wing towards St. Mark's square was built in its present form from 1424 onwards. The canal side wing, housing the Doge's apartments and government offices dates from the Renaissance period, being built between 1483 to 1565. The office of the Doge was originally approved by the Byzantine Emperor in the 7th century to oversee the local affairs of Venice. The first Doge's castle was built sometime around 810, however no traces remain of this original structure. Famous Artists print #23
