The artist finished this oil on canvas around the year 1630 with the size of the original artwork being 63 by 50 inches. Hermann Joseph was born in the middle of the 12th century in Cologne. At the age of 12 he entered the Premonstratensian Monastery at Steinfield in the Eifel region. He was mystically inclined from an early age and was especially devoted to the Holy Virgin, who according to ancient legends appeared to him several times during his lifetime. He composed sermons and hymns in her honor and received the surname Joseph from his brethren. Thereafter, Mary appeared to him with two angels to consummate a mystical wedding. Van Dyck painted this work in 1629 or 1630 as an altarpiece for the Jesuit Confraternity of Bachelors in Antwerp. The artist only received 150 guilders for the work. In the composition, the right hand of the Virgin touches the kneeling Monk's open palm which is supported by the angel. Religious art print #43
