In the 1820s Venetsianov began painting large canvases with more general images such as The Reapers. This artwork was created at the height of the artist's career and is considered one of his finest works. The picture is one of the many genre portraits painted modeled after Venetsianov's creative heritage. This romantic art was impressive with its profound characteristics and special expressions. The scene shows a young man and woman, taking a break after a hard days work of cutting the wheat crop. The boy and girl both have a sycle in their hand, these were used to cut the grain before the days of mechanization. Both are dressed in the peasant attire of Russia with the girl having two small butterflies on her arm.
