Vouet, Simon - Judith and the Head of Holofernes Fine Art Print
An archival premium quality art print of Judith and the Head of Holofernes by Simon Vouet for sale by Brandywine General Store. The oil on canvas was finished by the artist during the period of 1615 to 1620. The original artwork is now at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria. Judith is a brave and beautiful widow who was married to Manasses. Holofernes is a devout soldier of his King, whom he wants to see exalted in all the lands. He is given the task of destroying all the rebels who don't support the King of Nineveh. Israel finally becomes one of his targets. Judith is upset with her fellow Jewish countrymen for not trusting in God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors. She goes with her loyal maid to the camp of the enemy general, Holofernes. She slowly ingratiates herself into his camp and becomes trusted when she promises information to Holofernes on the businesses and going ons of the Israelite's. Gaining his trust completely, she is allowed access to his tent one night as he lays in a drunken stupor. She decapitates him, then takes his head back to the Israelites. The Assyrian Soldiers scatter to the winds without their leader and Israel is saved. Judith is courted by many but remains unmarried fro the rest of her life. Religious art print #29
