Wright, Joseph - Vesuvius in Eruption Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of Vesuvius in Eruption with a View over the Islands in the Bay of Naples by Joseph Wright for sale by Brandywine General Store. This oil on canvas was painted by the artist between the years 1776 to 1780. The original artwork now belongs to the Tate Museum but is currently on loan to the Derby Museum and Art Gallery in Derby, England. Joseph Wright visited Italy only one time during the period of 1773 - 1775, but he drew on this experience for his artworks the rest of his career. He was particularly enthralled by the power and majesty of Mount Vesuvius and over his life time painted over 30 canvas's of the volcano in eruption, even though during his stay in Italy the volcano never fully erupted. In this painting Wright has created a dramatic composition, taken from the foothills of Vesuvius, looking towards Sorrento and the island of Capri. The inclusion of the islands of Ischia and Procida, neither which could actually be seen from this spot, emphasizes the tranquility of the sea in contrast to the violence of the volcano. Scarcely visible in the fiery foreground are two men followed by a mourning figure, carrying the lifeless body of one of the volcano's many victims. It is thought this group was to represent the death of the elder Pliny in the great eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. Old Masters art print #60
