Benjamin Powell was a building contractor or undertaker as it was known in the colonial days of Virginia. He built several of the buildings and landmarks in Williamsburg. In 1774, as the Revolution approached, Powell served with Peyton Randolph, George Wythe, and other men of stature on a committee that enforced an embargo on selected British goods, leading up to the American Revolution from the Mother Country of England.
