This is an early hand colored plate showing the long red drooping flower of the Jacobean Amaryllis from the Curtis Botanical Magazine, Volume 2, which was published in 1788. This flower was described as being a native of South America and first known in Europe in 1593. When the roots are kept correctly, this flower will bloom profusely a couple times a year.
